About end-to-end encrypted messages

Direct Messages on InteractInk are end-to-end encrypted, which means your messages are scrambled on your own device before they're ever sent, and only unscrambled again once they arrive on the recipient's device.

In practical terms, this means the actual content of your conversations can't be read as plain text by anyone in between — not while it's in transit across the network, and not by InteractInk's own systems either. Encryption keys are generated and stored locally on your own devices rather than on a central server. If you sign in on a new device, that device needs to establish its own set of keys before it can decrypt your existing message history, which is why very old conversations can occasionally take a moment to sync the first time on a freshly added device.

It's worth being clear about what encryption does and doesn't cover here: it protects the actual content of your messages, but it doesn't hide who you're messaging or roughly when, since that basic metadata is still needed simply to route and deliver the conversation to the right accounts.
