Muting accounts

Article 2 of 10 in Safety and security

Muting hides someone's posts and replies from your feeds and notifications without unfollowing them, blocking them, or letting them know in any way — it's a quieter, more private option than blocking.

  • Open the account's ··· menu, either on their profile or on any of their individual posts.
  • Select Mute.

After muting, you'll both stay following each other exactly as before — nothing changes about your connection on paper — but their posts stop showing up in your Home feed and their activity stops generating notifications for you. It's the right tool when you just want a break from someone's content for a while rather than cutting off the relationship entirely, since unlike blocking, they're never told and nothing visibly changes on their end. You can also mute a specific conversation thread on its own, if you'd rather just stop getting notifications about one particular post without muting the account behind it.
